Dinant Belgium is a charming city that lies along the River Meuse and has a rich historical accounts especially during World War I. It is located in Namur region of Belgium in the south, and is one of the famous stops when touring the Ardennes region. Dinant Belgium is a nice escape for those who seek tranquility in nature, searching for a writing retreat, or simply to indulge in a city while being close to nature. If you’re planning to visit Dinant, below is a one day itinerary of the places to visit (by walking) including things to do in the city.

1. Citadel of Dinant

The Citadel of Dinant is one of the highlights of Dinant Belgium. For adventure seekers and health lovers, the citadel can be reached by taking 408 (steep) steps. It is also to possible to take a cable car to see the breath taking view of the city from the top. Another alternative is to take car going on the top of the mountain to see the citadel. According to the citadel’s website, the visit to the citadel is free. But during our visit two weeks ago, it costs 20 euro for adults and 15 euros for kids (up to 11 years old) for the use of cable car, entrance to the citadel, and 1 hour cruise of the city. Kids up to 3 years old are for free.

2. Notre Dame de Dinant Belgium

The Notre Dame of Dinant is another prominent landmark that you will immediately see when visiting Dinant Belgium. The Notre Dame de Dinant is located just right beneath the citadel. This stunning 12th-century Gothic-style church has an impressive onion-shaped bell tower and has witnessed the peak glory of Dinant during the medieval period. which you will often see in the photographed landmarks of Dinant. The entrance to the Notre Dame is for free, therefore take a moment to visit and admire the stained-glass windows and the serene atmosphere inside.

3. La Maison de Monsieur Sax

Also known as The House of Mr. Sax in English, La Maison de Monsieur Sax is an interpretative center dedicated to Adolphe Sax – the inventor of the saxophone. This place allows you to discover the life of the saxophone genius, his revolutionary musical masterpieces and technical inventions, as well as his challenges and successes in his life. If you are a music lover and is interested to better understand the wonderful story of the saxophone in an original and entertaining way, both visually and musically, then it is a must to visit this place. The entrance is free which makes it even more rewarding to visit.

4. Leffe Abbey & Leffe Museum

Leffe is a famous Belgian beer, which originates from Dinant. If you walk further from the House of Mr. Sax along the river, you can find the Leffe Abbey as well as the Leffe Museum. The museum offers insights into the history and brewing process of the Leffe beer. You can also enjoy a tasting session of this iconic Belgian beer during your visit.

5. River Meuse in Dinant Belgium

The river Meuse that runs along the city is of historical importance to Dinant as well as in many other European cities that it passes by. During the Middle Ages, the Meuse was considered the safest and cheapest means of transportation, as compared to other routes that lead through the Ardennes. Many towns and cities along the Meuse flourished and became rich due to exports worldwide, often the goods are carried on flat-bottomed boats with a shallow draught. These boats can cover more than 100 kilometers a day.

Taking a cruise of Dinant through the river Meuse will show you the famous attractions of the city. There are many boat tour companies to choose from and they offer tours every hours, so you can plan your cruise flexibly.

After the tour, you can also explore river Meuse by strolling along the riverside. There are also many restaurants to choose from for lunch or dinner. Try the local specialties like Couque de Dinant (a traditional hard biscuit) or a plate of Moules-Frites (mussels and fries), paired with a glass of Belgian beer.

6. Grotte La Merveilleuse

If you still have extra time, you can visit the Grotte La Merveilleuse, which is considered as one of Belgium’s most beautiful caves. This natural wonder features stunning stalactites and underground waterfalls. A guided tour here provides an enchanting conclusion to your Dinant adventure.
